Beginners to yoga may find it challenging to keep up with the fast pace and remain aware of your surroundings during class, not to mention remembering all of its complex names and movements. Even experienced yogis sometimes struggle with remembering exactly what certain terms mean due to being derived from Sanskrit; but there are ways you can familiarize yourself with its language before attending your first class.

Prana (prah-nuh) - the vital energy which gives life and vitality to living things, yoga enables practitioners to access it for rejuvenating and strengthening the body, improving health and spiritual growth.

Yin Yoga (yun-gah) - This form of yoga involves long-held poses using props for support and deep relaxation, making it an excellent practice for students with back issues as it increases flexibility and helps strengthen muscles. Yin is particularly useful for improving flexibility.

Savasana (sava-sana) - Savasana is the resting pose often done at the conclusion of yoga classes and sometimes known as corpse pose.

Karma (kar-mah) - the law of cause and effect, an integral component of yogaic philosophy. Aim of yogais is to minimize accumulation of Karma to avoid future suffering.

Yoga practitioners aim to break free of the cycle of birth, death and rebirth through physical exercise, breath work, meditation and self-discipline. Yoga represents the union of individual consciousness with universal consciousness - as described by India's oldest sacred texts such as Rig Veda and Sama Veda.
