Why is My Tattoo Raised?

If you have a tattoo and suddenly notice that the inked area feels elevated or has a bumpy texture, it's important to know why this is happening so that you can take care of it. Raised tattoos are surprisingly common and can be caused by a number of different things. The most serious issue that could be occurring is an infection, but in most cases it's a little more minor and can easily be resolved at home.

First and foremost, your tattoo may be swollen or raised simply due to weather conditions, your specific body chemistry or an allergic reaction. It's not uncommon for people to experience a histamine response to the ink in their bodies, even weeks or years after getting their tattoo.

Another reason that your tattoo might feel itchy and swollen is because the inked area is a hotspot for blood flow. If your skin is sensitive or you have a condition like eczema or psoriasis, it might be more likely for the inked area of your tattoo to itch and become irritated. This type of problem can be alleviated by using a good tattoo lotion that contains ingredients such as hydrocortisone to combat itching and inflammation.

Infections are also very common with new tattoos, and this is mostly because of poor tattoo sanitation practices at the tattoo parlor. Infections can occur if the artist didn't properly sterilize their equipment or if they used dirty needles. Infections are usually accompanied by other symptoms, such as fever, chills and red, warm and swollen skin, so if you're experiencing these symptoms it's definitely worth seeing your Doctor right away.
