Why is My Stomach Cold to the Touch?

We all experience cold spots in the body sometimes, especially on exposed areas like the neck wrists and ankles. These are caused by your energy (Ki) not flowing freely and need to be covered up again with clothes or other means of keeping your body warm, such as Shiatsu, Qi Gong and yoga.

The reasons for feeling a cold sensation in the stomach can be complex. In some cases it can be a sign of an illness, such as gastroenteritis or bacterial infections on the stomach lining. A cold sensation in the stomach can also indicate a more serious condition such as pancreatitis, which may need to be treated with medication or surgery.

Another reason for a cold sensation in the stomach can be due to exercise. According to an article published in the Physiological Reviews, muscles demand increased blood flow while exercising and this can divert heat from other parts of the body.

The article also states that the feeling of a cold sensation in the stomach is common for people who exercise regularly. Symptoms such as this can help the body to identify when it needs more hydration, or when something is wrong with the body and requires attention.

The occurrence of a cold sensation in the stomach can also be a sign that there is an underlying condition such as gastroenteritis, a viral or bacterial infection on the stomach lining, or a more serious condition such as pancreatitis. If the symptoms are severe, it is important to visit a doctor for diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications such as dehydration and pancreatic cancer.
