Why is Manuka Honey So Expensive?

Manuka Honey is not only unique and delicious, it also offers some powerful health benefits. But, as you may have noticed, it comes with a steep price tag, especially when compared to your average jar of clover honey. So, why is manuka honey so expensive?

Manuka honey is different from other varieties of honey in that it only contains nectar from one type of flower, the manuka or Leptospermum scoparium. This makes it a monofloral honey, which means that bees only forage from this single source of nectar throughout the year. In turn, this creates a more expensive honey since the honeybees have a very limited window of time to collect the needed nectar for the production of the unique honey.

The other factor that contributes to the high cost of manuka honey is that beekeepers have to go out of their way to ensure they are getting genuine Manuka honey. This is because it must be sourced from regions in Australia or New Zealand that are home to the indigenous Manuka plant. It should also bear a UMF brand rating that indicates the level of unique Manuka properties that are in the honey.

Among many other things, this includes the ability to treat stomach ulcers and to kill bacteria in the lungs for people suffering from cystic fibrosis. It has also been shown to promote good sleep quality, and lower the risk for diabetes and heart disease. And, it’s been found to have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that help to fight inflammation.
