Why Does My Lower Abdominal Feel Cold?

If you have a cold sensation in your stomach, it may be the consequence of several so-called “patterns of disharmony” according to Chinese Medicine. This is a philosophy that sees the body as a whole, rather than a collection of isolated parts, and recognizes patterns of symptoms or signs as the body trying to communicate with us when something is off.

A cold feeling in your lower abdomen can occur when the spleen and stomach are imbalanced. The spleen and stomach are responsible for the function of your digestive system, so when these organs are out of balance you can experience a range of issues.

Stomach pain can also be a sign of an infection or serious illness like gastroenteritis or prostatitis. These infections can lead to chills and abdominal pain, so if this is occurring alongside your cold sensation in your stomach you should seek medical attention immediately.

Intense coughing from a common cold or chest infection can over-use and strain the stomach muscles, leading to abdominal pain and a cold feeling. In this case, the pain may be accompanied by a loss of appetite or nausea.

A cold feeling in your stomach can also be a result of exercise and a reduction of blood flow to the gastrointestinal tract during exercise. This occurs because the heart is working harder to get the blood to your legs during a workout, leaving the gastrointestinal tract with less blood and making it feel cold. You can help alleviate this problem by eating more cooked and warming foods, such as beef stew or chai tea.
