Why Are My Feet Sticky?

The phrase “sticky feet” sounds like a bizarre medical condition or a superpower you can acquire, but the term actually comes from the world of rock climbing. Rock climbers use special shoes that allow them to cling to the smallest footholds. When their shoes get dirty, the tiny ridges that maximize surface contact give them stickiness. This gives them the ability to grip the ground or the wall as if by magic, making it easy for them to scale a sheer cliff face or defy gravity while casually moonwalking upside down.

While the cause of sticky feet varies from person to person, there are certain risk factors that can lead to this clammy catastrophe. Diabetics, for example, may experience excessive sweating in their feet due to high blood sugar levels. People with nerve damage to the peroneal nerve in their legs can also experience this uncomfortable sensation. In addition, women with a hormonal imbalance can have an increase in their sweat glands, leading to clammy feet.

Despite these factors, there are ways to combat this clammy dilemma. One of the most effective solutions is to soak your feet in a basin of warm water that’s infused with essential oils or Epsom salts. Afterward, dry your feet thoroughly, rubbing the soles of each foot against itself to break up any sticky residue. It’s also a good idea to wear moisture-wicking socks and breathable footwear. You can even add a little fun to your sock drawer by opting for a pair that’s covered in pizza slices or the famous faces of celebrities.
