Why an Addict Can't Love You

Addiction is a disease that affects every aspect of the person who struggles with it. It’s not uncommon for addicts to have trouble navigating relationships. They may lie, steal, and manipulate in order to get what they want. This can be very difficult for those who love them.

It can be especially challenging when they start using again and are unable to control their behavior. They often have a hard time admitting their problems to others, and even themselves. This is why many people wonder if an addict can love them. While it is possible for an addict to love you, they must be in recovery for it to be healthy and a true love.

Despite your best efforts, they might not be willing to acknowledge the problem or get help. Often, it is their addiction that makes them unable to recognize the consequences of their actions. This can be frustrating, but you should not give up. Instead, try to focus on yourself and your own needs. Set firm boundaries and take care of yourself by avoiding activities and conversations that have to do with drugs or alcohol.

It is also important to avoid enabling behaviors. This means you shouldn’t bail them out when they get arrested or pay for their drug-related expenses. It’s okay to be disappointed with their choices, but blaming them or taking on their emotional problems isn’t helpful. In addition, you should never allow them to use guilt or shame you into doing something that will hurt your own mental health.
