Which of the Following is Covered by Health Codes?

Health codes are a key guardian of public health and safety, regulating many aspects of daily living and business environments. From food handling and storage to employee hygiene and facility cleanliness, these regulations help reduce the risk of infectious diseases and environmental hazards. But which of the following is covered by health codes?

Food establishments must comply with strict guidelines set by health codes to ensure safe and hygienic dining experiences. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) created the Food Code, which regulates restaurant, cafe, and bar standards for food preparation, storage, and serving, including proper temperatures, sanitation, hygiene practices, and avoiding cross-contamination. The Food Code also includes requirements for facility layout and construction, ventilation, plumbing, and pest control.

Medical procedures are also regulated by health codes, which describe the services and diagnoses provided by healthcare providers. There are three systems of coding: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, which are used by healthcare providers; Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes, which are used by Medicare; and International Classification of Diseases, or ICD codes, which identify a disease, condition, or symptoms.

These coding systems make it possible for healthcare providers and medical billing companies to communicate about your treatment and bill insurance claims. However, they can sometimes be confusing to patients who review EOBs and medical bills from their health plans. The codes may be written in a shorthand script or, more commonly, in a numbered list. To decipher these codes, you can use a CPT code search or look at the medical coding glossary from the AMA website.
