What Toxins Are Released After Massage?

When a massage therapist kneads away at your muscles and soft tissues, there’s an invisible dance of physiological processes happening inside you. One of them is liberating toxins, which can have profound effects on your overall wellness.

In some cases, this can make you feel a bit cruddy or run-down after your massage, similar to how you might feel after a tough workout. Often, this is brushed off as the body flushing out waste or metabolic byproducts, and the advice to drink lots of water afterward is given.

But there’s some debate as to whether or not the toxins that are being released during massage actually make you sick, and what exactly they are. There are also some concerns about whether or not these toxins are being “flushed” or washed away with water, and the implications that could have on your health.

The truth is, the toxins being released during massage are simply waste products of your metabolism, as well as byproducts of inflammation. The lymphatic system is able to filter and excrete these substances in a number of ways, and a good massage can stimulate the immune system and help the body move this process along more quickly.

In fact, some research has shown that even a short massage can increase the amount of white blood cells in the body, including those that fight infection. This is why it’s important to get a regular massage and to have a strong immune system.
