What Soups Can I Eat With Diverticulitis?

Diverticulitis is a condition that occurs when small pouches develop in the lining of your digestive tract. These pouches can become inflamed or infected and cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation. The standard Western diet is high in fat, sugar, and low in fiber, which may increase your risk of diverticulitis. Changing your diet to include more fiber-rich foods and avoid foods that are high in FODMAPs, sugar, or red meat can decrease your risk of flare-ups.

If you have an attack of diverticulitis, your doctor will likely prescribe a clear liquid diet for one to two days. You can drink chicken broth, water or ice chips, Gatorade, no-pulp juice, coconut water, and even Jell-O (which is digested as a liquid). These fluids help reduce bowel movements and allow the intestines to rest.

Once you are feeling better, you can gradually start adding solid food back into your diet. It is important to ease into your regular diet because you don’t want to eat something that triggers another flare-up. You should also continue to avoid any foods that are difficult to digest. Instead, opt for soups made from soft vegetables that are easy on the stomach, such as vegetable soup or ham and bean soup.

It is also important to eat plenty of protein, especially during this time. Eggs are a good option because they are easily digested and won’t irritate your diverticula. You can also eat fish, which is high in omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients that are beneficial for your health.
