What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient Indian system of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines that originated with eight limbs that lead to spiritual awakening. Yoga brings about union between ourselves and all aspects of nature around us - making Yoga an effective means of unification with ourselves as well as with all things around us.

Modern physics has demonstrated how our being is interwoven with everything around us; our very existence depends on exchanging energy and matter with everything around us - this is what Yoga means by "union".

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or hitch, join, or unite. Yoga is a practice aimed at connecting one's mind with divine sources of perfect knowledge - not simply intellectually but experientially as well.

Yoga has many health advantages that have been scientifically demonstrated to improve flexibility, strength, balance and general wellness. Yoga has also been found to reduce stress and anxiety symptoms while encouraging healthier eating/activity habits and better sleeping patterns as well as relieving neck pain, migraine headaches and knee osteoarthritis symptoms.

There are various styles of yoga. Finding one that best matches your personality and lifestyle is key. Before embarking on any new exercise program, it is also wise to consult your physician or therapist first if any health conditions exist, to make sure it will be safe.
