What is Yoga?

What began thousands of years ago in the East as a spiritual practice has since evolved into a billion-dollar lifestyle craze embraced by celebrities, athletes and regular folks alike. Yoga offers both physical and mental benefits - including balance, strength, flexibility and relaxation - yet many have misconceptions about its true nature; for example some may consider it only an exercise routine with difficult physical postures to perform; this only represents part of what yoga encompasses.

Yoga is an ancient science and philosophy that helps us reach our highest potential. A complete path to self-realization, yoga allows practitioners to perceive things exactly as they truly are - no more, no less. Yoga also teaches that there are six layers to our being; physical body being the outer layer and comprising thoughts and emotions which create egocentric selves necessary for survival in this competitive world, then intuitive mind and expressive emotions of our true authentic selves, all leading up to what yoga refers to as "The Self."

Yoga has been proven to benefit various health conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Yoga practice can strengthen bones, improve cardiovascular system health and lower blood pressure while offering a calming effect, anxiety reduction and weight loss benefits - not to mention helping prevent injuries by increasing range of motion in joints. When selecting a yoga mat it's important to consider thickness, breathability and whether or not harmful chemicals such as PVC and phthalates exist in it.
