What is Yoga?

Many who begin yoga find that it can be an effective stress reliever and mood enhancer, helping them reduce blood pressure, relieve back pain and lose weight. If you have a health condition that could potentially interfere with practicing yoga, please speak to your physician first before engaging in it and be sure the instructor of your class is appropriately qualified to teach it.

Yoga is a body of physical and mental practices developed in ancient India and first codified by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras around 400 C.E. It involves various techniques designed to unite body, mind, soul and universal consciousness into an unifying entity.

Yoga offers many advantages, including enhanced flexibility, stronger muscles and reduced stress and anxiety levels. Yoga can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels - including beginners who should start slowly and with caution when beginning. Some styles of yoga are more intense than others and should be approached carefully; beginners should also note that certain poses may pose challenges to those living with conditions like sciatica.

Yoga is not typically associated with any particular religious tradition and can be practiced by people from any background. Yoga's focus is self-healing and its practice may involve working in group settings with an instructor or solo; psychotherapists or mental health specialists may also prescribe it.
