What is kief?
Kief is the most potent part of the cannabis plant. It contains more cannabinoids and terpenes than bud (cannabis flower). This means that it will provide you with a higher, more intense experience when smoking or consuming it.
It can be smoked by simply sprinkling a little on top of the flower or by mixing it into a joint. Users can also decarboxylate it to create edibles or tinctures.
The best quality kief will have a light blonde or tan color, similar to a fine powder. If you come across “kief” that has a greenish color it is likely mixed with other plant material and won’t be as potent.
How to Store Your Kief
You can store kief in your freezer or on a shelf for up to six months. It will need to be properly stored in order to avoid trichomes blowing away. It can be difficult to tell if your kief is pure by looking at it, but a simple test can help you determine its purity.
When you buy a piece of kief, it will typically come in a sealed container or bag. This is important because if the kief breaks open, it will expose it to air and other elements which can degrade its quality.
The quality of your kief will depend on the process it was harvested through. Some farms use dry sieving, which separates the trichomes from the rest of the plant material using gentle movements. Other methods of sifting involve placing the trichome-laden buds on a mesh screen and using a grinder to break them up.
