What is Green Noise?

Green noise is sweeping the sleep space on social media platforms, with many TikTok users swearing it’s their new go-to for a good night’s rest. But what is it exactly, and how does it differ from white or pink noise? We talk to experts to find out.

Green sound is a variation of white noise, but with a more natural and soothing vibe. It’s comprised of sounds that call nature to mind, like ocean waves and trickling waterfalls. Its ties to nature are thought to help promote relaxation and calm the mind, making it ideal for people who struggle with anxiety or racing thoughts at bedtime.

Compared to white noise, which contains all frequencies equally and has more of a hissing sound, green noise is soothing and has more of a tone, with a frequency that stays around 500 Hz. This low-frequency, soothing sound is the perfect background for helping you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.

In addition to its natural and soothing sound, research suggests that exposure to green noise may help reduce stress levels and enhance focus. It’s a great alternative to other sleep aids, such as white noise and blue noise, which can be too loud and distracting.

Although more research is needed on the effects of green noise, it’s worth giving it a try. Just make sure the volume is right—too loud and it can be disruptive, too soft and you won’t be able to hear it. If you have trouble falling asleep or have more serious sleep issues, be sure to speak to a medical provider as soon as possible.
