What Is Extended Tummy Tuck?

The extended tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to restore a firmer, flatter abdomen with tighter muscle definition. It can reverse damage to the abdominal muscles and skin caused by pregnancy, weight loss, aging, or genetics and provide an aesthetic appearance that diet and exercise cannot achieve.

This procedure is a good choice for patients who have recently lost a significant amount of weight or have experienced pregnancy and childbirth. The results of the surgery will last as long as the patient maintains a stable weight. However, if the patient gains a lot of weight again, the results may be temporary.

During the surgery, excess fat is removed from the stomach and flank area. The surgeon separates the skin from the underlying muscle tissue, and tightens it where needed for greater strength, tone, and definition. Excess skin is then trimmed and discarded. The surgery can be combined with liposuction for enhanced body contouring.

After the surgery, patients can expect some pain and swelling. The doctor will prescribe medication to help manage discomfort, and over-the-counter pain relief products can be used as well. Patients will likely have drainage tubes protruding from the incisions, and the doctor will instruct them on how to care for these drains until they are removed a few days after the operation.

For the best results, patients should follow the surgeon’s pre- and postoperative instructions. This includes getting plenty of rest and avoiding any strenuous physical activity until advised otherwise. It is also important for patients to wear a compression garment for several weeks after the surgery to promote healing and reduce swelling.
