What is Coconut Glycerin?

What is coconut glycerin?

Glycerin is a healthy, natural component of animal fats and vegetable oils. It can improve your dog’s eye health, boost skin hydration and aid in wound healing. Glycerin may also increase your dog’s endurance and nutrient uptake, and it can even help relieve constipation and promote hydration.

It’s commonly used in foods to help oil and water-based ingredients mix or to sweeten or moisturize a product. You’ll also find it in products such as low-fat frozen yogurt, ice cream and cough syrups. It’s also a component in many pharmaceutical drugs including heart medication, suppositories and anesthetics.

The clear, odorless liquid is derived from plant fats such as palm and coconut oil and typically is suitable for vegans. It is a highly effective ingredient in skincare and pharmaceutical products. Ingestion of glycerin is generally considered safe, but it may cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and thirst in some people (13).

Vegetable glycerin absorbs moisture from the air and draws it up into skin layers, which protects the cells from dryness and evaporation. It’s a key ingredient in glycerin soap, which is popular for sensitive skin and can soothe itching and irritation. It can also be a great addition to your pet’s shampoo or bath, which prevents dry and flaky paws and helps them heal more quickly. It may also prevent a condition called glaucoma by decreasing pressure inside the eye. One study found that glycerin was as effective as mannitol, which is normally prescribed for this condition, in relieving the pressure of glaucoma in dogs (2).
