What is Body Positivity?

Body positivity is a social movement dedicated to body acceptance. It challenges unattainable beauty ideals promoted by media that can cause feelings of inadequacy, comparison, and self-doubt. People who practice body positivity believe their worth does not depend on how their bodies look; rather it stems from what their bodies can do and function; this belief enables people to develop more positive relationships with themselves and overall well being.

However, the term has been misappropriated by individuals who may not adhere to its original intent. For instance, many users on social media who reveal their body journey and struggles through using #BodyPositive hashtag often share images depicting cis, straight white women in athletic wear. Finding content which illustrates more diverse body types may make people feel left out from joining this movement.

Concerns have also been expressed that advocating body positivity means not caring about one's health; this is certainly not true. Media and cultural messages play an integral part in shaping how we perceive our bodies, including food choices, exercise regimens, clothing needs and overall well-being.

There are various strategies we can all take to become more body positive, such as following body-positive feeds on social media, increasing self-care practices in daily life and challenging negative thought patterns that contribute to poor body image.
