What Is Body Positivity?

Body positivity encourages positive self-esteem and body acceptance by rejecting unrealistic beauty ideals and advocating healthy diet and exercise habits to maintain overall wellness of one's body. Furthermore, this attitude promotes can-do attitudes by encouraging individuals to step outside their comfort zones and try new activities, improving both mental and physical well being while decreasing obesity risk and helping prevent eating disorders.

An essential aspect of body positivity is to surround yourself with positive messages and images, such as unfollowing pages that promote body shame and following those that support you instead. You could also opt to log off social media for a day or week and replace it with positive material such as inspirational quotes, body-positive blogs and celebrities like Ashley Graham, Serena Williams or Demi Lovato who inspire you.

Maintaining a positive body image can be challenging in today's media-saturated climate. Scholars have critiqued current state of body positivity for perpetuating white and Eurocentric logic about what constitutes a "good" body, leaving behind bodies of color, disabled people and those not fitting the norm while center stage is given to slimmer bodies that align with beauty ideals.

At the core, it's essential to remember that your body is just one aspect of who you are; it shouldn't dictate your sense of self-worth. Instead, focus on all the amazing things your body does for you each and every day and remind yourself that its capabilities make life possible for all of us.
