If you're a TikTok user, chances are you've seen or even participated in the new shower trend known as the "everything shower." This elaborate suds session goes beyond simply washing your hair and body. Instead, TikTokers use the everything shower to pamper themselves head to toe with masks, exfoliants, oils and other products.
Some people even take the everything shower to a whole new level, with some routines lasting up to two to four hours. While it may seem like a luxury, the reality is that it can be quite beneficial to skin health.
For starters, the everything shower offers a chance to do a double cleanse, which can help prevent future breakouts by gently breaking down waterproof makeup and sunscreen residue. Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky, a dermatologist at the Premier Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, recommends using an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup and dirt, followed by a water-based cleanser.
You can also add a scalp treatment to an everything shower, such as a nourishing mask, scrub or oil, which can lift any build-up on the scalp, which can cause hair thinning and itchy scalp. After your cleansing and conditioning, you can finish with a body oil to give your skin that glowy, impossibly smooth finish.
After all that hard work, it's important to relax. "Spending too long in the shower can dry out the skin," explains dermatologist Dr. David Camp. So after you're all done, grab a cup of tea and relax.
