What is a Personal Development Plan?

Personal development plans (PDPs), or PDPs, are a way of setting and mapping out goals that will bring you closer to where you want to be. You may have heard this term used formally at work or school but the concept applies across any setting where structure can help achieve success.

Step one in creating a Personal Development Plan (PDP) involves recognizing your strengths and weaknesses through conducting a SWOT analysis; this involves considering your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that could impede or support your progress.

Once you have identified your strengths and weaknesses, the next step should be creating an action plan to address any obstacles in your way. Goal setting must be specific, measurable, attainable and relevant to self-improvement - using the SMART goal-setting method will help ensure they're realistic yet obtainable within your desired timeframe.

Establishing a Personal Development Plan (PDP) is only the first step. To truly ensure its effectiveness, you should continue tracking your progress and assessing whether you're meeting the outcomes set. Studies have revealed that people who report their progress each week achieve 40% more than those who don't report regularly - use tools such as a PDP journal or worksheet and set aside a dedicated time each week for reviewing it.
