What is a Personal Development Plan?

personal development plan

Personal Development Plans, or PDPs, are documents designed to outline your goals and the path toward their achievement. A PDP can serve as an excellent way of keeping yourself motivated during an apprenticeship or higher education experience, and beyond into working life. Your employer can also benefit from seeing where your career goals lie - they may be able to provide valuable assistance along the way!

PDPs involve identifying your strengths and weaknesses, setting realistic goals to enhance your skillset, and devising an action plan for reaching them within a specified timeframe. When setting goals in a PDP it is crucial that they remain both realistic and achievable as this will determine your ability to stretch yourself further than previously imagined. It is also key that setting these goals be taken seriously - it is your responsibility to follow through with them so they are reached successfully.

Reflecting on your progress, celebrating successes, learning from setbacks and failures, and adapting your PDP are essential parts of an enjoyable journey. Studies show that people who regularly report their goals each week are 40% more likely to achieve them - so take the time now to write out your PDP objectives and work tirelessly toward making them come true; you won't regret it.
