What is a Personal Development Plan?

Personal development plans are written documents that outline how an individual plans to enhance or develop their skills and abilities over a certain time frame, be it career related or self-development-focused goals that include both short- and long-term objectives.

A Personal Development Plan (PDP) helps individuals recognize their strengths and weaknesses, as well as setting realistic targets that increase the odds that their goals will be accomplished successfully. A PDP should be personalized according to each person's individual skillset, experience level and ambitions.

Employees need clear and defined goals that they can easily meet over time, broken into smaller steps that are manageable over time. Setting these goals is an integral part of personal development plans as it keeps employees focused and motivated during challenging parts of personal development plans. Furthermore, procrastination can become an issue easily so having a system in place to monitor progress is also vitally important.

An effective PDP should also identify resources and threats available to an individual, and acknowledge any progress made along the way. Doing this allows an employee to feel like they're making progress and reaching success; which in turn boosts morale and can increase productivity within their workplace.
