What Does Star Fruit Taste Like?

The exotic star fruit (Averrhoa carambola) is an eye-catching tropical beauty. Its unique oblong shape has five attached "wings" with thin green edging, and when cut horizontally across all of them, the fruit reveals its namesake five-point star design. Its luscious, edible flesh is yellow or white in color and contains tiny flat black seeds that can be bitter or sour depending on whether the star fruit is ripe.

The sweet and tangy flavor of star fruit can be likened to a mix of grapes, apples, pears, lemons, and oranges. It can also be a bit tart and slightly crunchy, comparable to a crisp apple or pear. Unlike many other tropical fruits, which can be overly sour or bland, perfectly ripe star fruit is refreshing and sweet.

Star fruit can be eaten whole, including its waxy skin and juicy flesh. However, it may be tough or mushy if it is unripe. Unripe star fruit also has an inherently sour taste, which can be unpleasant to some. It's best to use only ripe star fruit in recipes for which the taste of sourness is undesirable.

Look for star fruit that is brightly golden in color, with minimal patches of green, especially on the wing tips. It should be firm to the touch, and free of any blemishes. You can find star fruit at some grocery stores, but you'll have the most success finding it and getting a good selection at a local Asian grocer, since the fruit originates in Asia.
