What Does Lychee Taste Like?

The flavor of lychee is sweet, fragrant and delicate, and the fruit can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. The most popular preparation is to simply eat the fruit fresh, piercing the peel with your fingernail and sucking the flesh from the seed inside, discarding the hard, inedible shell. The fruit is also often used in tropical fruit salads, alcoholic mixed drinks and desserts. The lychee is rich in vitamin C and has a unique mouthfeel that makes it very refreshing to eat, and its delicate flavor adds a delightful twist to classic dishes.

The fresh fruit is available from May to September in the United States, though it will only ripen properly in warm climates. They can be found in the produce aisles at most national supermarket chains, as well as at Asian markets and specialty stores.

When lychees are fully ripe, they can be easily stored in the refrigerator. They will keep for two weeks this way, but can also be eaten right away. Lychees are a wonderful addition to fruit salad, green salads and can be boiled down into syrup for cocktails, tea or desserts.

The lychee is an exotic and nutritious food that can be enjoyed year-round, either fresh or frozen. They are a powerhouse of antioxidants and have high levels of vitamin C, which is essential for immune system function and maintaining a healthy body. They are a great source of fiber and also contain vitamin A, B1 and B2, calcium, potassium and phosphorus.
