What Does Hit a Lick Mean?

If you want to make money fast, "hitting a lick" is an expression that means you're able to score a lot of cash in a short amount of time. This can happen in a number of ways, including illegal activities like robbing or selling drugs, and more wholesome situations like gambling or investing.

The slang term hit a lick has been around for more than 100 years. It's most commonly used to refer to a criminal that scores big, but it can also be used to describe someone that makes a large sum of money quickly in other circumstances.

For example, Cardi B has a song called "Hit A Lick" with Offset that talks about robbery, but the phrase also applies to someone that wins a large sum of money in other ways, like at the casino. Regardless of how you're winning your dough, this slang phrase is appropriate to use in casual conversation, but should never be used in professional settings, especially when describing a heist or other illegal activity.

The phrase is related to the idiom, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush." That's because having something now is often worth more than having something else at a later date. This is especially true if it's a sum of money you can spend freely or invest, and is why the idiom has been around for so long.
