What Does Durian Taste Like?

Durian is a large oval fruit about the size of a bowling ball and covered in sharp spikes. Inside the shell are hard non-edible seeds surrounded by flesh that can range in color from yellow to brown. It’s an exotic, spiky fruit that is both loved and hated by many people. Those who love it say it has a velvety texture and caramel coffee flavor that can’t be replicated by other foods. It can be eaten raw, incorporated into cocktails and desserts or cooked into a variety of dishes. Durians are a good source of B vitamins, vitamin C, minerals and healthy plant compounds.

There are over 500 different durian varieties and their flavors can vary drastically. They can be sweet, creamy, bitter or dry. The aroma of durian can be so pungent that it is banned on public transportation and in some hotels. This aroma is caused by the chemical ethanethiol, which becomes stronger as the durian ripens.

The best way to find out what durian tastes like is to try it. You can purchase fresh durian at your local Asian supermarket or from an exotic fruit seller online. You can also buy pre-cleaned durian packaged in plastic or frozen (as just the pods, with seeds, or pureed). Visiting a durian farm is a great way to get fresh, ripe durian that hasn’t been sitting around under the hot tropical sun.

If you’re not ready to take the plunge with a whole durian, try a slice of durian ice cream or other products that don’t have the strong smell. To store a raw durian, some recommend wrapping it in a few layers of plastic cling wrap and putting it in the fridge, but this doesn’t prevent the odor from permeating your food.
