Transcendental Meditation Reddit
TM is a form of nondirective meditation that uses a mantra and the body’s natural tendency to move toward stillness. It has been around for over 60 years and is practiced by many, including Oprah.
The name implies that the goal of this exercise is to find a transcendent state of consciousness, and while the claim is a bit of a stretch, it’s been shown to have some benefits, including reduced stress levels and lower blood pressure. Having said that, it’s best to consult with your physician before starting any new health regimen.
Transcendental Meditation is a big business (see here). There are several different versions of TM, some using the oh so trendy brainwave technology known as alpha waves and others based on traditional yogic meditation practices.
It has been compared to the popular and highly effective meditation techniques of the Buddhist tradition such as vipassana and samatha.
Unlike most other types of meditation, this one is best done in the presence of a qualified teacher or guide.
The most important component of TM is the practice of meditating with a mantra and the resulting benefits are significant. The most obvious ones are the aforementioned nirvana state of mind, but some meditators have reported increased focus and heightened intuition as well.
Other benefits include a healthier nervous system, better sleep and less stress. As with any form of meditation, it’s best to talk to your doctor before beginning a new routine.
