The Practices of Jnana Yoga

Jnana yoga (which translates to knowledge in Sanskrit and yoga as liberation in Sanskrit) involves developing clarity and understanding about yourself, your mind, body, and the universe. This approach to self-realization helps keep stress at bay by relieving its negative impacts and freeing one from baggage or illusions that prevent their true personality and inner selves from emerging.

Practices of Jnana Yoga differ from physical yoga in that its practices focus on studying sacred texts and philosophy rather than doing physical poses. Jnana yogis must apply these teachings to their lives rather than simply study them intellectually.

Jnana yoga's foundational practice, viviksha or discernment, allows practitioners to make distinctions between what is real and unreal, permanent and temporary, the Self and anything not Self. Yogis develop this capacity through self-study, contemplation and collective study sessions with those dedicated to the same cause.

Viveka or dispassion is another practice of the Jnana Yoga tradition that helps one recognize that, though our bodies, thoughts, and emotions change constantly, part of us remains constant - this constant witness being recognized through self-enquiry practices such as exploring thought structures.

Moksha or liberation is the ultimate goal of Jnana Yoga and comes when one realizes they and Brahman are one.
