The Importance of a Personal Development Plan

An effective personal development plan (PDP) is key to reaching your goals and ambitions. Benjamin Franklin once famously observed: "failing to plan is planning to fail." By outlining areas you would like to develop, as well as how they should be achieved, your personal development plan provides the framework you need for taking effective steps toward your desired endpoints.

A PDP provides you with the tools to enhance your performance, gain new skills and knowledge, and advance in your career. It starts by identifying professional strengths, areas for improvement, and blind spots - something often accomplished via 360-degree feedback from supervisors, peers, and subordinates; alternatively interviews or structured surveys using online tools may also help.

The next step in developing your vision of success is analyzing areas for improvement and how they relate to it. Communication skills are vital both at home and at work and can be enhanced through training courses or practice sessions. Digital literacy should also be prioritized through reading up on its topic or participating in online courses or writing a blog.

Goal setting is an integral component of personal development planning, and should include short and long term objectives that you wish to attain over time. Setting deadlines and breaking your key targets down into achievable steps are also necessary in this process.
