The Benefits of Infused Oil

benefits of infused oil

Herbs infused into oil are a popular home remedy for many ailments including rashes, bug bites and minor cuts. They can be a wonderful addition to your homestead apothecary.

Herbal oils are made from plant material that has been infused into a carrier oil such as olive, almond or jojoba. Herbal oil contains natural antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. They are often rich in flavonoids, glucosides and terpenes.

They also have beneficial effects on the skin. They can be used as a massage oil, lip balm or in baths.

Infused oil can last for up to a year if stored properly away from sunlight and in cool temperatures. They are best stored in dark-colored containers.

Dried herbs are generally the best for making infused oils because they have no extra moisture that may spoil the oil and introduce pathogens. Infused oils containing fresh herbs should be wilted before use to help separate the herb from any pathogen-introducing moisture that is introduced during the infusion process.

A wide range of herbs, flowers and spices can be used in infused oil making. Some of the most common are arnica, comfrey, St John’s Wort and lavender.

Herb infused oil can be used in cooking, as a rub or marinade for meat or even as a base for salad dressings. It is easy to make and can be stored for a long time. Infused oil is a wonderful alternative to store-bought oils and will save you money!
