Practicing drumming meditation is one of the easiest ways to focus on what’s going on around you. In addition to the meditative benefits, it can also help you to release negative emotions and stress by physically stimulating the body.
The most common form of drumming is shamanic trance-inducing drumming, often accompanied by singing or chanting. This form of drumming can be a powerful tool for releasing and healing negative emotions, especially when the music is played in a sacred space.
A drumming trance can take you to places you might not otherwise go. It can also bring you into a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you.
Research suggests that rhythmic drumming, whether performed by a shaman or by a non-shamanic participant, can induce a state of trance. The experience varies from participant to participant, but some of the most common subjective experiences reported include shamanic imagery, becoming energized, mental or physical discomfort, sensations of movement, flying or distorted body image and loosing track of time.
In addition, research indicates that repetitive drumming can produce feelings of euphoria and creative flow. This is similar to the experience of deep meditation, when the brain hemispheres are brought into synchronization, which can also produce feelings of euphoria.
This hypnotic state can be used for a variety of purposes, from shamanic journeying to simply relaxing in a trance-like state. Drumming is particularly helpful for people with ADHD or other brain disorders.
