The Benefits of Asana Yoga

Asana (physical postures of yoga) are known to its practitioners. An aspirant begins by concentrating on their body before gradually learning how to control his or her mind, leading them towards union of soul and physical vehicle - human. To achieve this union on an physical level is crucial; an aspirant should pay particular attention to care for his or her physical being as working with this tool is easier than dealing with one's mind, which often plays tricks on him or her.

Yoga postures help stimulate all physiological systems of the body, including circulation (yoga asanas are isometric exercises that require holding muscle tension for seconds or minutes), respiratory system, digestive system, endocrine system and nervous system. Regular practice increases strength, endurance and balance. Postural yoga improves flexibility and musculoskeletal health; weight-bearing aspects may even help protect bone density against osteoporosis.

Yoga helps to reduce muscle and joint stiffness and tension, which in turn reduces or even eliminates back pain and joint discomfort. Yoga also strengthens immunity and respiratory systems and can assist with various conditions like high blood pressure, asthma, diabetes and depression.

Yoga poses can be challenging for the body and relaxing for the mind, providing both physical and psychological challenges and benefits. To maximize these effects, approach each practice with an open and noncompetitive mindset, listening to what your body tells you as feedback; if any pain, discomfort or injury arises during practice do not force yourself through it; instead modify poses to accommodate physical limitations and accommodate pain relief accordingly.
