There are many women out there who have never used a dilator. Dilators can be a very helpful tool and with the right information, they're easy to use. Female dilators are designed to help women with painful intercourse, vulvodynia, vaginismus, and other sexual problems by retraining the vaginal muscles to relax. They come in various sizes and styles and can be used on their own or with other therapies such as vaginal moisturizers, or prescription hormones.
Here are some basics on how to use a vaginal dilator:
1. Choose the right dilator. There are a variety of different vaginal dilators on the market, each with its own unique features and benefits. It’s important to choose the right one for your needs, so be sure to read reviews before making a purchase. I always recommend using an American made silicone flexible dilator. The silicone dilators resemble body tissue and are more comfortable to use.
2. Get prepared. Before using a vaginal dilator, make sure you’re well-prepared by preparing your body and mind ahead of time. This means being patient and knowing what to expect. These are the recommended steps to take to get prepared: Always find a time and place where you can relax and won’t be interrupted.
1 Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the dilator and wash the dilator with mild soap and rinse well. Many women find that warming the dilator under running water helps with insertion.
2 Generously apply a high-quality lubricant to the dilator and your vulva. Locate the insertion point to your vagina and insert the dilator slowly. Be gentle and patient. Do not “push through pain”.
3Take deep breathes to help with relaxation
4 Try to work up to 12-15 minutes sessions 4 x a week. If you experience pain or discomfort, stop and take relaxing breathes. You may need to use a smaller dilator, or more lubrication. If you continue to have pain on insertion please contact your health care provider. When you are finished using the dilator, remove it slowly by pulling outwards.
Remember: always start with the smallest size dilator and work your way up as needed.
In conclusion, using a female vaginal dilator safely and effectively is important for both your safety and comfort. Follow the above tips to ensure a smooth, safe experience. And remember: to always clean the dilator after use.
