Spiritual Growth - What Is It?

spiritual growth

The Bible contains much information regarding spiritual development. For instance, in 2 Peter 1:5-7 we can learn that "be diligent to add goodness, virtue, knowledge and self-control to faith, patience, longsuffering, godliness, brotherly kindness, love as well as watchfulness and temperance" (NKJV).

Praying and reading Scripture are vital practices to spiritual development. Reading and memorizing verses directs your heart towards His will while subjugating any desires from sinful desires to His authority. Additionally, prayer provides wisdom development as you connect with a higher power - both of these practices provide strength to withstand difficult seasons of life.

Spiritual progress can be measured by one's level of maturity in Christ; however, this measurement relies on subjective weighting and scaling that may change over time. Furthermore, comparing one's spiritual growth against that of another person can cause feelings of insecurity, envy and pride.

Spiritual growth is an ongoing journey. From awakening to believing and belonging, you'll eventually establish your identity in Jesus as Lord of your life and serve and lead through ministries such as compassion, administration, or evangelism. By tending your roots steadfastly - clearing away weeds as they arise while waiting patiently for God's pruning - God will bless your labor with an abundant harvest - making the fruit of your labor evident to those around you!
