Smoking Skullcap - A Nerve Tonic

Skullcap, also known as scutellaria lateriflora or mad dog weed is a perennial herb in the mint family that has been used for centuries. It is a nerve tonic that helps to ease anxiety, stress and restlessness and is often enjoyed in herbal teas or as part of smoking blends. It is believed to work by bind to and inhibit the activity of the GABA receptors in the brain, which can be a natural sedative.

It can be combined with cannabis to provide a relaxing experience. When smoked, skullcap produces thick, creamy smoke with a hint of sweetness and an earthy aroma. It has a gentle calming effect that can help ease tension and insomnia, and it pairs well with strains with high levels of myrcene (cannabis’ main terpene). It can be added to a sativa blend for a calm and focused high or blended with indicas to aid with sleep and relaxation.

The Cherokee use this plant in ceremonies to mark the transition of girls into womanhood. It has been shown to have a sedative effect, which is helpful for nervousness and anxiety, as well as helping to relieve stress-related headaches and migraines.

Smoking skullcap is generally safe when taken in small doses. However, it has been reported to cause hepatotoxicity when combined with other botanicals. One such case was a 28 year old female who developed jaundice with hepatocellular necrosis after taking skullcap and pau d’arco for multiple sclerosis.
