You may have noticed a few changes to your local convenience stores lately, with more weed and flower displays than the usual sundries and snacks. These new shops are called smoke shops, and they’ve become a popular way to buy marijuana.
But you’ll need to be careful: Most of these shops are illegal, and the city recently began cracking down on them. A new law called Local Law 1001-B prohibits landlords from knowingly leasing space to unlicensed marijuana or tobacco sellers, and fines them up to $10,000 for violations.
The new law is expected to lead to the closure of many illegal smoke shops around the city. But it’s not going to be easy: Landlords have a lot of leverage, and they are unlikely to give up their storefronts easily. The City Council’s Lynn Schulman, who sponsored the law, says the first step will be to send letters warning landlords of their obligations.
