What does meditation mean to you?
There is a lot of variation in the ways people practice meditation, but there are several standardized approaches that have made it onto the mainstream. One of these is mindfulness-based stress reduction, developed for the health care community. The other is a type of meditation known as mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, which was designed to be scientifically and clinically effective while being compatible with a variety of worldviews.
Does meditation work?
There are several meditation techniques that have been shown to produce noticeable benefits in both the short and long term. Many of them are designed to be simple and straightforward, whereas others require a little more finesse and creativity. For example, it may take a little more work to get the most benefit from breathing exercises, which typically involve a long and painful series of deep breaths.
