Pushing against a stationary object for eight seconds is what type of exercise?

Pushing a stationary object -- such as a wall or handrail -- strengthens the muscles of your hands and fingers without moving your joints and limbs. This kind of static exercise is called an isometric.

These types of exercises are designed to strengthen specific muscles and increase the length of time a muscle can be contracted. Resistive isometrics can also be used to increase the strength of a muscle by gradually increasing the amount of resistance and the duration of the contraction.

To do the push against a wall exercise, stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and place your palms on the wall at chest height. Then lean into the wall and push. You can also increase the difficulty by putting your palms further away from each other and bending a little further into a lunge position. Performing isometric exercises such as this will increase your strength to a certain extent, but they won’t improve your strength nearly as much as isotonic (dynamic) or isokinetic exercises.
