Migraine meditation is an alternative treatment for chronic headaches that may help people cope with stress and improve their overall health. This type of meditation requires purposefully focusing your attention on the present moment and accepting what is happening without judgment.

Several studies have shown that mindfulness meditation can reduce pain and improve people's overall well-being, including their quality of life. Research has also shown that meditation helps regulate neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine in the brain.

Meditation can be done through a variety of different practices, from sitting in silence or meditating with a guided audio to combining careful breathing and calming meditation with body poses in yoga. In addition to reducing stress and headaches, this practice can boost brain chemical balance and strengthen your immune system.

Other meditation methods, such as progressive muscle relaxation or internal focused meditation, can be helpful for preventing migraine attacks by calming the default mode network and emotional center that are often activated during chronic pain experiences. But one form of meditation, called spiritual meditation, seems to do an even better job at reducing pain sensitivity and lowering the need for headache medication.

Another study found that those who did spiritual meditation had a significantly lower frequency of migraine headaches and were less likely to deem their migraines as severe when they occurred. Moreover, they used significantly fewer migraine medications compared to the other groups. The researchers suggest that this may be due to increased pain tolerance.
