Meditation For Headache - Can Meditation Help You Avoid Migraines?

Meditation is a practice that can improve your pain levels, headache frequency and stress relief. It may also help you avoid migraines.

A recent meta-analysis found that meditation and other mindfulness practices improve pain intensity and reduce headache frequency. These benefits were found in both meditation naive and meditation experienced patients.

In addition, the study found that a meditation-based stress reduction program (MBSR) improved migraine symptoms and decreased the amount of analgesic medication used by patients who had frequent headaches.

Several studies have shown that meditating can reduce headache triggers such as anxiety, tension and stress. This can be done by lowering cortisol and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Meditation can also increase your dopamine, serotonin, and melatonin levels. These hormones help you feel more calm and focused, which can help prevent migraine attacks from occurring.

A key tip when meditating is to be careful about how you breathe. It is important not to exhale deeply and forcefully, as this can cause your mind to wander.

Don't be afraid to change up your meditation routine. Try different types of meditations or different times of the day, to see what works best for you.

Be sure to pick a time when you aren't feeling your worst, but if you do, then be sure to stop right away and take a break. You don't want to irritate yourself further by trying to meditate when you are already battling migraine pain and other symptoms.
