Centering meditation is an essential component to any mindfulness practice. It can help decrease stress and anxiety, improve mental focus and performance, and cultivate a sense of calmness in your daily life.

How to do it

Practicing a centering meditation is simple and requires no special equipment. You can do it at home, on the go, or in your yoga studio (many styles of yoga practice begin with a short centering meditation).

Select a word or symbol that you consider spiritually grounding for you. This can be a name for God or a holy phrase like Shalom, hope, or joy.

Refocus on this word or symbol as you breathe and allow any distracting thoughts to pass. You might find it helpful to use a mantra, which is a short phrase or word that you repeat during the meditation.

A body scan is another technique that helps to refocus your attention on a particular part of the body. You can do a body scan at the beginning of your centering meditation or as a standalone practice whenever you need to quiet your mind and bring it back to the present moment.

Our minds are often scattered, which can lead to distractions, strong emotions, and thoughts about the past or future. Learning to sit with our emotions is an important lesson in mindfulness, because they are only as powerful as we let them be.
