Meditation and the Monkey Mind - Understanding How Meditation Can Tame It and Keep You Calm

monkey meditation

Meditation is a practice that can sharpen your concentration, help you overcome stress and anxiety, persevere during times of change, teach you to love more deeply and experience more joy. But, many people find it hard to meditate because of their “monkey mind” – a restless, chaotic thought stream that is constantly churning through their heads, sometimes making sense and other times just spinning out of control.

Meditation and the Monkey Mind: Understanding How Meditation Can Tame It & Keep You Calm

The monkey mind is the default mode network that our mind automatically jumps into when we are not fully aware of it, and that often causes us to waste time, believe our insecurities, covet the success of others, or just be unable to focus on the task at hand. When we practice mindfulness, we learn to identify the monkey mind and tame it by practicing mindful breathing techniques.

Breathing Techniques for the Monkey Mind:

The most effective practice for calming your monkey mind is practicing meditation, where you bring your attention to one thing — typically the breath — for an extended period of time. Try a Yoga Practice:

The body scan, focused attention, and body awareness techniques of yoga can also be helpful in bringing you to the present moment when your monkey mind is churning out all kinds of thoughts that don’t serve you. In addition, yoga can help you develop the strength and resilience you need to handle difficult changes in your life.
