How to Test Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is used in a wide variety of applications and industries. When used properly, it decontaminates without creating long-lasting pollutants. Ensure that your peroxide is of the proper concentration by testing it. However, most methods of determining the H2O2 concentration require the handling of unstable chemicals and produce additional chemical waste.

The HI3844 is a titration-based chemical test kit for analyzing hydrogen peroxide and comes with all the necessary reagents to perform up to 100 tests. It determines the vapor and solution H2O2 concentration by measuring the color-indicating ability of titanium(IV) oxysulfate, a synthetic material which is an excellent indicator of peroxide levels. The titration is carried out by acidifying the weighed sample with standard potassium permanganate and titrating the solution until the first permanent pink colour persists for 30 seconds or longer.

This is an easy-to-use test method that eliminates the need for volumetric glassware, a buret and a titration cell. It is not suited for use in samples containing organic or inorganic substances that reduce potassium permanganate (such as chloride ions).

The reflected image shown here is from two XploSafe PS test-strips before and after exposure to different concentrations of solution phase hydrogen peroxide gas. The test strips were exposed to a H2O2 concentration of 28 ppm for one hour. The photometric readings provide a significantly more accurate quantification of the H2O2 level than a simple titration and visually comparing the test strip to a color chart.
