How to tell if terbinafine is working
You can expect a cream, gel or spray to start to work within a week and a tablet to take 6 weeks (for fingernail infections) or 12 weeks (for toenail infections). It takes a long time for a nail to grow out, so it’s important to stick with the medication for as long as your doctor recommends. If you stop too soon, the fungus will come back and may be harder to treat next time.
During the course of treatment you might experience itching, a small amount of rash, or other side effects. However, most of these get better as your body gets used to the medication.
This medicine can interact with certain other medications. It is especially important to tell your doctor if you are taking antifungal medicines, blood thinners or any other supplements or herbs. You should also let your doctor know if you have liver or kidney problems as this medication may affect your liver function.
Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking terbinafine and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take this medicine by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. If you are using the granules, sprinkle them into a spoonful of soft food, such as pudding or mashed potatoes (do not mix with apple sauce or other fruit-based foods). Swallow right away without chewing.
