How to Stop Lip Smacking in Dogs

If your dog is chewing or licking their lips, it's important to determine the cause of this behavior and get them help. Dogs that lick or bite their lips can have serious medical conditions like parvovirus, which is very dangerous to puppies, and gastrointestinal obstructions. If your dog is licking or biting their lips for comfort or as a sign of hunger, they may be teething or have a new tooth trying to come in and could need more food than usual. Babies also smack their lips when they are sleepy or hungry and sometimes it can be a sign that they are ready to start eating solids, but always consult with your pediatrician before making this change in diet.

Often, dogs with mouth pain smack their lips because saliva helps to lubricate the area and can be soothing. The most common causes of mouth pain in dogs are dental issues like cavities or gum disease, or orthopedic problems such as a broken jaw or arthritis. Observing your pet and recognizing other worrisome symptoms, like erratic walking or repeated biting at the air, is a good indicator that you should seek veterinary attention.

When recording vocals, it's easy to pick up unwanted mouth noises like lip smacking or saliva crackling that are difficult to remove from the audio file. Try hydrating before recording or tilting the microphone away from you to reduce these noises. If these methods fail to work, a professional can edit your audio file with software to eliminate them.
