How to Measure Your Hips Correctly

Measuring your hips may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and technique it can be very simple. Whether you are buying clothing that is tailored to your hips or simply want to have accurate measurements for tracking fitness or dieting progress, knowing how to measure your hips correctly can help you get the most out of your body's measurements.

The first thing you need is a measuring tape. A flexible cloth tape measure is ideal but you can also use a piece of string or even a ribbon, just make sure it's flexible enough to circle around your hips. You'll also need a mirror, as it will be easier to see the widest part of your lower body when you can actually see it. Finally, you'll need a buddy to help -- having someone stand behind you and hold the tape measure against your bare skin will make it much easier to spot the exact widest point of your hips.

Once you have your measuring tool, remove any clothing or clothing that is tight on your hips (although having a little extra room to move in your clothes can be helpful) and locate the widest point of your lower body just below your buttocks. With the measuring tape secured around your hips, circle it over your buttocks and back down towards your waistline to locate your full hip measurement. Then, pinch the two ends of the measuring tape together where they meet and record this number.
