How to Measure Hips

Hip measurements are important to know for a variety of reasons, including finding well-fitting clothes and tracking changes in body composition. In this article, we’ll give you a few easy ways to measure your hips so that you can confidently match your measurements to the sizing charts offered by different brands of clothing.

To get the most accurate hip measurement, stand with your feet together and locate the widest part of your buttocks. This point should be about six to eight inches down from your natural waistline, and it is usually easiest to feel by putting your hands on your hip bones (also known as the iliac crest). If you don’t have a tape measure, a flat ribbon or string will also work. Just be sure to measure straight across this widest point and double your measurement to include the front and back of the circumference.

Keep in mind that hip measurements differ between men and women due to differences in body anatomy and proportions. For example, women tend to have wider hips than men, which contributes to a more hourglass-shaped body silhouette.

Another way to measure your hips is by using a pair of pants that fit you well. Spread out the pants on a hard, flat surface like a floor or large table. Locate the widest area of the hips, which should fall one-and-a-half to two inches below the top of the zipper. This method is less accurate than measuring your own hips, but it is still a good idea to try this technique at least once so that you can compare measurements and ensure that your pants are fitted correctly.
