How to Make a Borg

A borg is a mixed drink made in a gallon-sized plastic jug, typically containing vodka, water, and powdered or liquid drink mix (such as MiO or Kool-Aid) that’s tailored to the maker’s taste. Borg recipes and challenges are gaining popularity on TikTok and other social media platforms, especially among Gen Z college students. While it may seem harmless, this drinking trend is actually increasing risky behaviors like binge drinking and alcohol abuse.

While many college students are claiming that BORGs, or Blackout Rage Gallons, are “better” than traditional sharing drinks, a closer look at these jugs reveal they’re not without risks. BORGs are often a fifth of alcohol, or the equivalent of 17 shots, and they contain large amounts of sugar. Drinking that much alcohol over a short period of time can lead to serious health consequences, including alcohol poisoning, injury, sexual assault, and drunk driving.

Borgs are also a hazard because they don’t contain any electrolytes or other ingredients that can help prevent hangovers. Instead, they’re full of a high concentration of alcohol and can be very difficult to control or track. In addition, a fifth of alcohol is a lot to consume in one sitting, especially for someone who is not used to it. This is a recipe for dangerously high alcohol consumption, which can cause nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and even unconsciousness.
