How to Improve Circulation in Legs

The circulatory system carries oxygen-rich blood throughout the body, providing nutrients and eliminating waste products. Poor circulation can cause uncomfortable symptoms like cold feet and hands, a pins and needles sensation in the legs, swollen ankles and feet, and varicose veins. Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to promote healthy blood flow in the legs. Aim to get at least two five-minute walks a day and increase how long you walk each day. Other activities that can help include:

Taking the pressure off your legs by elevating them can help improve circulation. You can do this by placing a foot on an Ottoman while sitting, or by lying down with your feet propped up by pillows while you sleep.

A healthy diet can also help improve circulation. Make sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Avoid foods with added sugars, which can contribute to obesity and poor circulation.

In order to keep your circulation flowing, it is important to drink enough water. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day.
